- Have you installed all the updates on your computer?

I would suggest you to follow the below methods:

Method 1: Run the Hardware and Device troubleshooter by following the steps below:
- Click on the Start button, and type “Troubleshooting” on the search bar.
- Click on troubleshooting, then click on “Hardware and sound”.
- Under Hardware and sound, click on “hardware and devices”.
- A pop-up will appear, click on the “Next” button and your hardware troubleshooting will start.
Method 2: The issue may occur if the drivers for scanner are not installed or updated. I suggest you to install/update the latest version for drivers by downloading it from the manufacturer website.
Method 3: You can try installing the drivers in compatibility mode and check if it helps:
- Press the ‘Windows key on the keyboard.
- Type compatibility in the search box and then press enter.
- Click “Run programs made for previous versions of Windows” option from the list appeared in the left side.
- Select the drivers and install.

I managed to get through to HP's help desk and after they came onto my PC and tried various things they advised me to buy a more modern printer. As a pensioner I find that an unacceptable alternative. I asked them to report it as a customer of theirs I expect them to be proud of their products and to provide the necessary drivers when a major upgrade takes place. I am however not very optimistic !
